An Analysis of Manufacturing in Mentor, Lake County and the Cleveland-Akron, Ohio CSA (1997-2002)
The recently released (July 2005) Economic Census provides a snapshot of manufacturing data in Ohio for 2002; and also provides an opportunity to analyze trends in the five-year time horizon between 1997 and 2002.
According to information compiled from the Economic Census, Mentor continues to rank 10th in the state of Ohio in terms of all employees engaged in manufacturing; only Solon (#9) and Mentor (#10) represent noncentral city locations. Only Columbus and Canton increased employment between 1997 and 2002; the other eight communities experienced a decline ranging from 7.5 percent ( Mentor) to the city of Cleveland (32.7 percent). In terms of number of establishments, the city of Mentor continues to rank seventh in the state. Between 1997 and 2002, Mentor actually added two companies; while company loss ranged from 1.4 percent for Columbus to 13.1 percent for the city of Cleveland.
The Cleveland-Akron CSA represents the seven-county area of Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage and Summit. According to the 2002 Economic Census, there were 5,684 establishments employing 222,079 persons and representing $8.9 billion in payroll. This represents a decline of 5.6 percent in the number of establishments, a 13 percent decline in employment and 5.3 percent decline in employee payroll since the 1997 census. A simple calculation indicates the average firm employs 29 people with a payroll of $40,327/employee in the Cleveland-Akron CSA. Lake County had 735 establishments, while Mentor had 246 firms or roughly one-third of the county total; this is roughly the same percentage as in 1997. The number of firms declined by 34 in Lake County, while the number actually increased by two in the city of Mentor. Relative to the manufacturing employment, it declined approximately 13 percent in the county (25,423 to 22,002) and about 7.5 percent in the city of Mentor (8,617 to 7,969). The average firm in Lake County employs 30 persons, while the average firm in Mentor employs 32 workers. In terms of payroll, the average in Lake County is $39,874 and $38,662 in Mentor.
Of the five industry groupings for which data was collected and reported in Mentor; the fabricated metal product manufacturing consisted of more than half of the establishments, followed by machinery manufacturing which constitutes 25 percent of the market. More revealing however, is the actual employment, which is dominated by fabricated metal product manufacturing (25 percent), miscellaneous manufacturing (27 percent), machinery manufacturing (24 percent), etc. Machinery manufacturing, transportation equipment manufacturing and miscellaneous manufacturing all average payrolls in the $44,000/job range, while plastics and rubber product manufacturing and fabricated metal product manufacturing average about $10,000 less per job. Miscellaneous manufacturing which includes medical equipment and medical supplies represents about one-third of the total value of shipments. Miscellaneous manufacturing also represents about 50 percent of the total capital expenditures for manufacturers in Mentor. Companies represented by this sector included: CR Bard (no longer in city), Frantz Medical Development, The Mill-Rose Company, Steris Corp., U.S. Endoscopy Group Inc. and Volk Optical Inc., among others.
